becoming.be:Open Content Workshop

The vzw cargo organises a serie of four multimedia workshops. I was invited by Margit and Stefaan to work during a week(30 August -> 03 September 2004) on the theme of Open Content with a great team of participants. These people were Kris Kievid, Leni Boom, Margit Tamas, Hektor Giro and Tim Martens. Their interests varied from ethnopsychiatry to games and architecture. This diversity of approaches and their willingness to engage in dialog contributed for a large part to make this workshop and interesting moment of experiment and discussion.

We discussed a lot the different preconditions necessary for a work in collaboration and the different free and non free licenses. We tested the becoming platform developped by Dominique Callewaert and gradually learned how to initiate a positive dialog between the testing users and the programmer of a web project. We had a dialog with Pierre De Jaeger who gave an overview of the radioswap project and learnt the basics of sound editing with Wendy Van Wynsberghe (and audacity )

Becoming.be is a flexible platform designed to allows the publication of media documents on the web. It is written with the idea in mind that different people will use it to create images, sounds, texts that can be shared and remixed in different pages.
To start an experiment, the participants have been proposed a ballad in the city of Oostende and to follow a certain itinerary, taking a picture or a note every 25 steps. The different views of the urban environment resulting from it have constituted the basis of a collaborative experiment.(this proposal has been inspired by the work of Peter Westenberg).
