Ping! Pierre De Jaeger’s concert

July 10th, 2004 by nicolas_m

Pierre De Jaeger

Pierre De Jaeger played yesterday night, 9th of July in Majorca.
“L’Essoufflement: A collective listening experience blurring the line between performer and audience.”
Pierre did his concert in the garden under the moonlight. The piece begun with everyday sounds played very low and hard to discern from the surrounding nature. He gradually introduced wonderful samples as the voice of Nalo Hopkinson reading one of her novel or a Muslim prayer

BIOTERROR CHARGES DOWNGRADED TO MAIL FRAUD

“BIOTERROR” CHARGES DOWNGRADED TO “MAIL FRAUD” IN STEALTH INDICTMENT
U.S. Attorneys attempt to cast $256 technicality as health and safety
issue in “stealth” indictment

Professor Steve Kurtz was charged today by a federal grand jury in
Buffalo, New York–not with bioterrorism, as listed on the Joint
Terrorism Task Force’s original search warrant and subpoenas, but with
“petty larceny,” in the words of Kurtz attorney Paul Cambria. (See
http://www.caedefensefund.org/ for background.)

Also indicted was Robert Ferrell, head of the Department of Genetics at
the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Public Health. The charges
concern technicalities of how Ferrell helped Kurtz to obtain $256
worth of harmless bacteria for one of Kurtz’s art projects.

The laws under which the indictments were obtained–Title 18, United
States Code, sections 1341 and 1343, covering mail and wire fraud–are
normally used against those defrauding others of money or property, as
in telemarketing schemes.

This is a far cry from the bioterrorism charges originally sought by
the District Attorney. To make a “federal case” out of such minor
allegations, the District Attorney will have the burden of proving
criminal intent.

“There was very obviously no criminal intent,” said Kurtz attorney
Cambria. “The intent was to educate and enlighten.” Cambria suggested
that the pursuit of such a minor case at the federal level was
profoundly absurd. “If the University of Pittsburgh feels that there
was a contract breach, then their remedy is to sue Steve for $256 in a
civil court.”

Critical Art Ensemble subpoenaed by the FBI

May 31st, 2004 by nicolas_m

In 1998, the team of Constant invited Critical Art Ensemble to make a performance in the Beursschouwburg. We were interested by their ability to reveal cleverly the politics at stake in the field of genetics.
We were, and still are, impressed by their analysis and by their talent to create situations in which the public is confronted to fondamental questions about technology, science and power structures.

That is why we are shocked to read on the rtmark’s website:

FBI ABDUCTS ARTIST, SEIZES ART

Feds Unable to Distinguish Art from Bioterrorism
Grieving Artist Denied Access to Deceased Wife’s Body

On the morning of May 30, two members of the Critical Art Ensemble were subpoenaed by the FBI. The FBI, we now know, will seek to indict Steve Kurtz before a grand jury on June 15. More details to follow.

Financial and other help are more urgently needed now than ever. Thanks to all who have already helped or volunteered to do so.

Vj7 Book: The movie

May 24th, 2004 by wendy

Here is finally the little film. It took a long time to find a format small enough. The quality is far from super, but you get an idea of the book, I hope! In any case, for me it was my second experiment with video, filming and editing (the first one was already four years ago).

The book is available at the usual address (see home page for phone and e-mail). It is not really complete yet, some software and sound is following!
